A beautifully soft and buttery orange bundt cake finished with a glossy citrus glaze, just like the classic bakery-style cakes. Made with fresh orange juice and orange zest, this moist citrus cake is perfect for morning tea, afternoon gatherings or special occasions.
Ingredients for orange bundt cake
Cake
- 250g softened butter
- 1½ cups caster sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 2½ cups self-raising flour
- ½ cup plain flour
- ¾ cup sour cream
Orange syrup
- ⅓ cup fresh orange juice
- ¼ cup caster sugar
Orange glaze
- 1½ cups icing sugar, sifted
- 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
How to make orange bundt cake
- Preheat oven to 160°C fan-forced (180°C conventional). Grease a 10-cup bundt tin thoroughly, making sure all grooves are well coated.
- Beat butter, sugar and orange zest together until very pale and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Fold in the sifted flours alternately with the orange juice and sour cream until the mixture is smooth and combined.
- Spoon mixture evenly into prepared bundt tin and smooth the surface. Tap tin lightly on the bench to remove air bubbles.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean and the cake is deep golden.
- While the orange bundt cake is baking, make the orange syrup by gently heating the orange juice and sugar together until dissolved.
- Allow cake to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before carefully turning onto a wire rack. While still slightly warm, slowly spoon the orange syrup over the cake so it absorbs into the surface and keeps the crumb moist.
- Cool the orange bundt cake completely before glazing.
- To make the glaze, mix icing sugar with enough orange juice to create a thick but pourable consistency. Spoon over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip naturally down the ridges of the bundt cake.
Notes
- Use a thicker glaze rather than a thin icing so the drips hold their shape.
- Allow the cake to cool completely before glazing.
- For the rich golden-orange colour, avoid overbaking and use fresh orange zest and juice.
