Flower Power: stunning Japanese windflower

Japanese windflower (Anemone hupehensis and hybrids), also known as Japanese anemone, is a graceful perennial from East Asia that shines in the autumn garden. This autumn flowering perennial produces tall, wiry stems topped with delicate, poppy-like flowers in shades of soft pink, rose and pure white, hovering above attractive clumps of deep green foliage. As many summer blooms fade, these elegant Japanese windflowers bring a welcome lift and a sense of movement as they sway in the breeze.

How to grow Japanese windflower in Australian gardens

They thrive in cool to temperate regions and perform best in parts of southern and eastern Australia where summers are not excessively hot. Plant them in rich, well-drained soil in part shade or filtered light. They look stunning mass-planted beneath trees, in cottage-style borders or naturalised along garden edges. Be sure to seek them out now in full bloom at garden centres.

If you’re planting new perennials this season, it’s also worth knowing what might be damaging young plants — read more here.
