Fun in the garden in January

January is a wonderful time for family gardening in Australia! The warm summer weather offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities that are both fun and productive. Here are some ideas:

1. Building a Butterfly Garden

  • What to plant: Butterfly-attracting plants like marigolds, lavender, and milkweed.
  • Activity idea: Let the kids decorate a butterfly watering station using a shallow dish with stones and water.

2. DIY Garden Crafts

  • Make garden markers using painted stones or craft sticks.
  • Build a scarecrow as a family project.
  • Decorate pots with colourful paints and patterns.

3. Water Play and Garden Care

  • Set up sprinklers or water play areas to keep cool while watering the garden.
  • Have a “water the plant’s relay race” to make garden chores fun.

4. Creating a Compost Station

  • Teach kids about recycling kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost.
  • Let them help decorate a compost bin with paint or stickers.

5. Garden Wildlife Watch Bingo

  • Spot insects, lizards, and birds in a park or in your own back yard. Create a journal where kids can note what they see. Or put them into a grid card that they need to tick off and call BINGO once they have found them all.
