Grow carrots in the family garden

4 proven tips to grow carrots in your family garden

From tiny seeds to crunchy treats – Grow carrots at home

Kids love to grow carrots and there’s something extra special about seeing your kids out in the family garden pulling up fresh carrots from the soil right before dinner. Whether they’re perfectly straight or amusingly wonky, homegrown carrots are full of flavour, fun to grow, and a great way to get the whole family involved in the garden.

Why grow your own?

Homegrown carrots are sweeter and more fragrant than store-bought ones – there’s no comparison! And when they’re grown in healthy, humus-rich soil without harsh chemicals, you know they’re as good for you as they taste. One sowing can keep you harvesting for months, from baby carrots through to full-sized whoppers.

The secret to straight carrots

Forget digging deep and breaking your back – we’ve found a better way! The key to growing lovely straight carrots is soil structure, not tilling. Carrots thrive in loose, well-aerated soil that’s full of life. That’s where compost and no-dig gardening come in.

Instead of turning the soil, simply spread 3–5cm of compost, like Rocky Point ActivGrow, on top once or twice a year and let worms, microbes, and fungi do the hard work of building structure. This no-dig method keeps your soil open, moist, and perfect for growing long, straight carrot roots — and it’s easy for kids to help with too!

If your soil is compacted or heavy clay, build a raised bed 20-30cm deep and fill it with free-draining organic loam. Carrots also prefer a neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6–7), so throw in a bit of garden lime if your soil pH is low.

Planting made easy

Here’s a fun, simple way to sow carrots with the family:

  1. Use a trowel to make a shallow, U-shaped trench in the surface of your compost rich soil.
  1. Water the trench well to moisten the soil below.
  1. Sprinkle carrot seeds into the trench – don’t worry about spacing yet.
  1. Cover with a thin layer of compost (about 5mm deep).
  1. Water gently with a fine spray.
  1. Lay a board or some hessian over the row to keep it moist until the seeds germinate (which can take 10–20 days). Check daily and water if needed.

Try mixing in a few radish seeds – they sprout fast and help mark the row! Or use carrot seed tape to grow carrots for even spacing.

Growing & harvesting

The best time to grow carrots is in cool to warm weather, so sow a new row every few weeks through autumn and spring for a steady supply. Water regularly – especially early on – and keep the soil consistently moist to avoid bitter or cracked roots. Don’t be fooled by lush leaves; always check the soil with your finger! Spread The Garden Family Sugar Cane Mulch between the rows to help inhibit weed growth and keep soil moist.

Thin seedlings when they’re about 5cm tall, giving each plant about 3cm of space. This helps avoid overcrowding and gives your carrots room to grow fat and flavoursome. Baby carrots can be ready in as little as two months. For bigger ones, wait 3-4 months, but don’t leave them too long or they’ll get woody.

Top tip – Choose seeds over seedlings
If you want to grow carrots they are best when sown directly from seed, as they don’t like having their roots disturbed. While you might spot carrot seedlings in punnets at the nursery, you’ll get the best results by heading straight for the seed rack. Direct sowing gives you stronger, straighter carrots—and happier harvests!
