improve clay soil

What is the best way to improve clay soil?

Work with the soil you have

Clay soil gets a bad rap, but it’s usually rich in nutrients and excellent at holding moisture. The trick is improving drainage, which is the first step when you want to improve clay soil. If you’re growing fruit trees or vegetables that demand sharp drainage, leave the heavy clay where it is and build up instead, creating a raised layer of free-draining soil blended with quality compost.

How to improve drainage

In the rest of the garden, work with what you have. Light cultivation when the soil is dry helps open it up. Always try to avoid digging when wet, as this causes compaction. Adding gypsum can help improve structure and drainage by encouraging particles to form stable aggregates and further improve clay soil over time.

Improve clay soil structure with organic matter

Most importantly, add organic matter regularly. Compost, aged manure and surface mulch feed soil life and gradually transform dense clay into productive ground. Green manure crops such as oats or mustard also help. With steady care, you can continue to improve clay soil until it becomes wonderfully workable.

Once you have improved your clay soil, understand the importance of mulch for your next garden project.
