3 gardening things to do July

3 must-do garden tasks for the whole family to help with

Gardening is not just about nurturing plants; it’s a wonderful opportunity for family members and friends to bond and create lasting memories together.

Here are three essential garden tasks that you can enjoy as a family or with friends and get everyone involved in the process.

1. Feed and water cabbages

Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are heavy feeders and will not thrive without adequate nutrition. Apply Rocky Point ActivGrow organic fertiliser pellets around their roots and water them in thoroughly.

Repeat this application every six weeks for a bountiful harvest everyone in the family will enjoy!

2. Plant winter colour

Looking to brighten up a dull courtyard or garden corner? Visit your local garden centre to see what’s in bloom right now. Potted flowers offer an instant lift with advanced poppies, primulas, petunias, dianthus, and impatiens in bloom. Also, check out native flowering grevilleas, banksias, correas, and tea trees, which will attract and delight birds, bees, and butterflies as well.

3. Prune roses

Rose bushes need a thorough winter cleanup to prepare them for spring flowering. Start by removing dead and diseased wood and thinning weak growth. Cut out stems that cross the centre of the bush to create an open vase shape. Prune the remaining stems back by one-third to one-half, making your final cuts just above an outward-facing bud. Finally, spread compost and The Garden Family Sugar Cane Mulch over the roots and water thoroughly.

Family fun in the garden this month:

  • Involve your children in feeding and watering the cabbages.
  • Share your knowledge about the importance of water and nutrients for plants.
  • Turn planting winter flowers into a fun family outing; let everyone pick their favourite flowers to plant.
  • Create a family scrapbook with photos of the flowers and the pollinators they attract.
  • Teach older children how to prune safely and correctly.
  • Let younger ones help with spreading compost and mulch.
  • After the hard work, relax together and admire your tidy rose bushes, anticipating the beautiful blooms to come in spring.

By making these garden tasks a family affair, you’ll not only maintain a beautiful and productive garden but also create a space where family members of all ages can connect with nature and each other.

Happy gardening!
