What’s wrong with my compost? It’s terribly wet and stinky, and I can’t bear to lift the lid of the bin. What can I do to save it?
This is a common issue in compost bins that contain a high amount of fruit and vegetable scraps. While these inputs are excellent for adding to compost, they contain a lot of moisture and need to be balanced with dry materials such as newspaper, dry leaves, wood chips, or Sugar Cane Mulch.
These dry materials will absorb excess moisture and help to maintain air pockets throughout the heap, allowing composting organisms to thrive. Keep a supply of dry materials by your bin and add a bucket of dry material for every bucket of food scraps.
To fix a wet and stinky heap, remove the contents and rebuild the pile in thin, alternating layers of wet and dry materials. This will get your compost back on track in no time.
Why not get the family involved and make it a fun and educational family project!
