Tibouchinas have been putting on a spectacular display with their brilliant blooms in shades of purple, pink, mauve, and even white. Originally from South America, these evergreen beauties thrive in Australian gardens, adding vibrant colour from late summer through autumn. The most common varieties include Tibouchina ‘Alstonville’ and T. ‘Kathleen’, small tree or large shrub varieties perfect for shade and screening – look out for T. ‘Noelene’ too, with flowers that start white then turn to a mauve-pink. T. ‘Jules’, and T. ‘Groovy Baby’ are stunning compact shrubs ideal for borders and pots.
These versatile plants love a sunny spot with well-drained soil and benefit from light pruning after flowering to maintain shape. Whether you need a striking feature tree or a burst of colour in a pot, there’s a tibouchina to suit your space. Look out for them at your local garden centre and plant one to enjoy their stunning blooms year after year!
